Be Still...

1 Kings 19

11 Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire, and after the fire a still small voice.

13 So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” The peace you are looking for and the strength that you need is found in stillness... in quietness before the Lord...

We hear God's still small voice when we quiet ourselves before Him. But even in opportunities of rest and quiet, we can still be very restless. Have we lost our ability to be still and know that He is God?

Oftentimes, God is not found in the thunderous roar of the crowd or the clanging noise of musical crescendos. The shepherds found God in the obscure and simple manger. Jesus isolated Himself every morning to be alone with His Father. Most of the time, God sets aside a man or a woman to a solitary place - isolates him/her; to encounter him/her; to speak to him/her and to embrace him/her.

GOD WANTS US TO PAUSE REGULARLY. SELAH; to shut down the noise and the distractions and focus on Him - this is our "Quiet Time" and God knows we need it. "Come away with me", the Spirit of God says... but we don't want to. We keep moving... we keep working. We don't know how to stop; we've developed a spiritual ADHD because of the systems and culture of this world. But the Biblical truth still remains... In the QUIET and in STILLNESS,God is there...

+ Psalm 46:10 He says, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."

+ Exodus 14:14 The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.

+ Psalm 37:7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!

+ Psalm 62:5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.

+ Job 6:24 Teach me, and I will be silent; make me understand how I have gone astray.

+ Psalm 131:2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me.

+ Isaiah 32:17 And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever.
