Devotional _ Why We Shouldn't Worry

By Jerry and Tess Manalang

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 6:25-34

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labour or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

In this text, Jesus illustrates 3 basic necessities for human existence. Food, water, and shelter. Jesus is pointing out that God the Father is concerned even to the most basic needs that we have and tells His disciples to not worry. We all know what will happen if we don’t have these basic needs in our lives. We will not be able to survive. Bear in mind Jesus is not saying don’t eat, don’t drink or take shelter. He gives an assurance about God's Character and Integrity and that we can trust Him. Why? Because if we call God Father, then the Father will make sure that he will provide all the things we need according to His tender mercies and His richness.

2 Reason Why We Should Not Worry

1. We are Valuable in God’s Sight

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6:26‬ ‭NIV‬‬

What can we learn from the bird?

Have you seen a bird with a big barn full of worms or a barn full of seeds?

Have you seen a bird that is starving and start dying?

We don’t, because our Heavenly Father feeds them and Jesus said that we are more valuable than them.

Don’t get me wrong the bird they don’t just sit and wait with their beak wide open waiting for the worm to come, no they go out and find food they do work.

Church what are you worrying about, Are you worried about your health your financial status, your work, or your visa and If you do all you could and yet seem like nothing is happening still, then we need to rely upon our Father in Heaven,

We need to trust Him. that He will supply all our needs. If you prayed The Lord’s Prayer In Matthew 6:9 then you are God’s children and we should not be in need.

There is a reason why Jesus taught that prayer to His disciples so they know who they are. They are God’s children. So are we Church.

2. Worries Will Not Do Us Any Good.

v. 27 "Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

Worry will not give us extra hours in our life. Well in fact it will do the opposite. it will do us harm it cause us a lot of trouble in our life, physical and mental health. I notice this in my own life when I start worrying about something my stomach start to play up acid reflux, anxiety, out of focus and worse depression.

Right now I have all the reason to worry because of the lockdown. I don’t have work, and what I’m getting from the government is not enough for our everyday needs. But I do have this peace and security that we will be okay because I know my God is with us.(Emmanuel)

So church instead of worrying we need to seek God. Matthew 6:33 says "but seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

I don’t know about you but for me, I choose to believe in God’s Word rather than worrying. Because God and His Word are One. Church, we need to trust God in whatever circumstances we are in.

‭‭

Romans‬ ‭8:32‬ ‭NIV

“He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?”

God did not just provide for our spiritual needs (salvation) He is also concerned with our physical needs and all we have to do is come to God.

‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭5:7‬ ‭AMP

“casting all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully].”
